We recommend completing at least 1,000 practice questions, plus the diagnostic exams prior to taking the actual exam.
The actual exam is typically only about 10-15% math, so on average, expect to see about 10 math questions on the exam. For those who need additional help practicing math, we recommend completing the math challenge questions on the TestPrep site.
For new investment bankers, we typically recommend about 50-75 hours of total prep (about 4-6 weeks while working full-time). For experienced bankers comfortable with financial statements, valuation, and M&A, we typically recommend between 40 – 50 hours of prep (2-3 weeks while working full-time).
There are three diagnostic exams, available online. These exams should be staggered with the practice exams so that for every 250 questions you complete online, you complete one diagnostic exam. The diagnostic exams are very close in difficulty to the actual exam, so they should be completed closed-book in one sitting. You should not do any of the diagnostic exams until you are within two weeks or less of taking the examination. You should complete the benchmark exam 2-3 days before your scheduled exam date.
Our online exams tend to be slightly harder than the actual exam, so scores in the high-60s and low-70s puts candidates in a strong position. The final diagnostic exams are similar in difficulty to the actual exam. Those who pass our final benchmark exam, pass the actual exam over 99% of the time.
Time management is important on the Series 79, given that there are a number of multi-step math questions which take time to work through. Though most people are able to finish the exam, you should expect to use most of the time and might not have time to review questions marked for review. The pacing to follow on the exam is 20 questions every 30 minutes. This will ensure you finish with some additional time for review.
