Series 79 FAQ
Can I take the Series 79 Exam even though I am not sponsored?

You must be sponsored by a FINRA member firm in order to take the Series 79. Learn more about sponsorship and consider the SIE exam if you aren't sponsored.

How do I enroll in a live Series 79 class?

Add All Access Pass to your course and you can enroll in any of our Series 79 live (virtual) courses through your Training Center, along with an onboarding call and review sessions. With the All Access Pass, you have unlimited access to our instructor-led sessions.

How many questions should I complete on the practice exams before I take the Series 79 Exam?

We recommend completing at least 1,000 practice questions, plus the diagnostic exams prior to taking the actual exam.

How many times should I expect to use a calculator on the exam?

The actual exam is typically only about 10-15% math, so on average, expect to see about 10 math questions on the exam. For those who need additional help practicing math, we recommend completing the math challenge questions on the TestPrep site.

What is the usual study time for the Series 79?

For new investment bankers, we typically recommend about 50-75 hours of total prep (about 4-6 weeks while working full-time). For experienced bankers comfortable with financial statements, valuation, and M&A, we typically recommend between 40 – 50 hours of prep (2-3 weeks while working full-time).

How should I incorporate the diagnostic exams into my prep?

There are three diagnostic exams, available online.  These exams should be staggered with the practice exams so that for every 250 questions you complete online, you complete one diagnostic exam. The diagnostic exams are very close in difficulty to the actual exam, so they should be completed closed-book in one sitting. You should not do any of the diagnostic exams until you are within two weeks or less of taking the examination. You should complete the benchmark exam 2-3 days before your scheduled exam date.

How does the difficulty of your practice questions compare to the difficulty of the questions I am likely to see on the actual exam?

Our online exams tend to be slightly harder than the actual exam, so scores in the high-60s and low-70s puts candidates in a strong position. The final diagnostic exams are similar in difficulty to the actual exam. Those who pass our final benchmark exam, pass the actual exam over 99% of the time.

Should I expect to use the full time allotted on the Series 79 Exam?

Time management is important on the Series 79, given that there are a number of multi-step math questions which take time to work through.  Though most people are able to finish the exam, you should expect to use most of the time and might not have time to review questions marked for review. The pacing to follow on the exam is 20 questions every 30 minutes. This will ensure you finish with some additional time for review.
