Series 7 Content Changes

FINRA recently released a new Series 7 Content Outline which went into effect on November 7, 2011. FINRA regularly updates the content of the exam to reflect new rules and securities products, but this was a more substantial reorganization of the outline. Significant changes to the Series 7 Content Outline include:

  • New registered representative "functions" and a number of questions per function that differs from the current breakdown of the examination.
  • The assignment of "tasks," "knowledge items," and rules to each of the functions.
  • The inclusion of new content to the outline which, while possibly tested before, may not have been written into the old outline.
  • A change in the passing score from 70% to 72%. This will require candidates to correctly answer 180 questions to pass the exam.

All of these changes, including the new passing score, were effective Nov 7, 2011.
